The Spiritual Side of Bipolar Disorder Management

Here is something interesting- every time I make a presention- someone in the audience asks my view on how to deal with bipolar disorder on a spiritual level. Some ask me if I agree with the term THE GIFT OF BIPOLAR and if I use meditation or a religion to deal with the illness.

I have a complicated answer. I think that a spiritual approach to bipolar disorder management works well when you’re not in a serious mood swing- I am sure many would agree with that. It can also help when a person is mildly to moderately depressed. But when it comes to serious depression- I feel that spiritual doubt is often the norm.  It’s hard to believe when an illness is threatening your life. But…. I know of many people who literally survive bipolar disorder because of their deep spiritual beliefs.

It’s complicated isn’t it.

And it gets very, very complicated with mania and psychosis. Mania can lead to a feeling of spiritual awakening that is based off chemicals instead of a true transformation- many people feel an incredible letdown when the mania is gone and the euphoric, religious experiences leave as well.

Psychosis and spirituality is a completely different story and one I will address in a future blog.

I am interested to know how you see the role of spiritually and bipolar disorder management.

Mania and the Holidays

I always write about depression and loneliness during the holidays, but for many people, mania is the problem! It can be very overstimulating to buy presents, decorate the house, cook food and be around a lot of people.  But the main concern is travel. If you’re going to travel, make sure you have a mania plan in place. What are your first signs of mania? Have you ever gotten manic on a trip before? How do you deal with time changes?

Here are three tips:

1. Let others know what to look for concerning mania. Be honest and give them a list. Then tell yourself you’ll listen and not get mad if they see the beginning signs of mania. Then get help.

2.  Get your medications on a time scheduel before you go.  Even a two hour time change can mess up a medication schedule. Especially if you’re dealing with  jetlag. We respond top time changes a lot differently due to our brain chemistry.

3. Set a limit on spending and if you feel yourself getting a bit too excited about buying presents people don’t need with money you don’t have, be careful and see this for what it might be- signs of mania.

Now is a good time to make a plan. I’m part way through a new book on bipolar and travel- and will have it out next year- but for now, there are many good blogs on this site about travel. I use my Health Cards Treatment System each time I travel- it makes it a lot easier to track my moods and show others how to help. You can read about the Health Cards to the right.

Happy travels- start planning today!

Julie Fast Bipolar Coaching: What I’ve Learned from Coaching Family Members and Partners

The following is a story of how working with clients has taught me what information parents and partners truly need. If you have not visited my coaching page, here is the link: http://www.juliefast.com/family-coaching/

In 1994 after my then partner Ivan come home after a three month stay in the hospital- I thought to myself- on day I am going to help people get through something like this because there sure isn’t anyone here to help me get through it! Now, fifteen years later I am fulfilling my promise to myself. The coaching has been an amazing experience, but also a very surprising one. Here are a few things I have learned from working with so many clients:

1. The system has hardly changed AT ALL compared to how it was in 1994. It still favors the patient over the family member and partner and  many people with bipolar disorder who are obviously very ill are sent home as they are not completely a danger to themselves or others.

2.  Psychosis is the most difficult symptom for family members and partners to understand. I have to point out a lot of psychotic behavior that is missed or confused with mania.

3. Parents and partners are worn out, often scared, worried and frustrated with the system.

There are so many commonalities – which makes sense as bipolar disorder is an illness with very set symptoms and behaviors!

My first goal is to offer as much information as possible about bipolar itself- we can then work on communcation, hospital visits and other topics.

Your Favorite Inspirational and Spiritual Books

This is the time of year we need to feel loved and welcome- and we all want to change and make 2010 the best year ever! So, let’s make that happen this year.  I’m asking people to send in their favorite inspirational and life changing books so that others can benifit from the author’s wisdom.  The books can be faith based, funny, about bipolar disorder, memoir, weight management and more. I will look over all of the books  before they are posted. Hmmmmm . Can I add my own books! 🙂

Julie

I will add the first one- The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. This book profoundly changed my life as it taught me to take care of myself and stop worrying about why others do what they do. I will never know unless they choose to tell me. It also helped with my paranoia.  It’s definitely an odd book to read at the beginning, but when you get to the four agreements, I think you will be amazed!

A Thank You Note from Julie

Hello to everyone!

I want to say thanks for all of the comments and questions I receive on this blog. They mean a lot to me and I know they are important to other readers as well. Thousands read this blog for inspiration each month- and what you write really puts a human face on bipolar disorder. I have noticed lately that many of you are leaving supportive comments on the suicide blog entries.

I wish that I could answer all of the questions I recieve- I do read them all and try to write blog posts that address the most common questions. Many answers are found in my books as well.

My newly revised website http://www.bipolarhappens.com/ has a LOT of free information on the topic of bipolar disorder including its symptoms and triggers, the medications used to treat bipolar disorder, tips for parents of teenagers and a great deal of information for families and partners.

You can also read more about the treatment plan I created in 1999 when I was not able to manage my bipolar disorder with medications alone. Thie plan is called the Health Cards Treatment System for Bipolar Disorder. My book Take Charge of Bipolar Disorder will give you a solid foundation on the basics of the illness as well as a very useful and proven treatment plan. This book answers many of the medical questions about bipolar disorder that I receive on the blog including historial information on the illness, the different diagnoses and all of the common symptoms of the illness.  The Health Cards are oriented towards a lot of the feelings that come from bipolar symptoms as well as the triggers. All of my books are available on online book stores and in libraries.  The Health Cards are only available on bipolarhappens.com.

All of my books build off of each other and answer many questions.

I also have individual coaching available for parents and partners who want to work on a specific situation. You can click on the link to the right for more information.

Please do keep sending comments and questions and I will get to as many as I can. It’s also very helpful when a reader has advice for another reader. I see all comments first, so don’t worry about giving the wrong advice. All advice from the heart is good advice!

My goal when I started writing books on bipolar disorder was to help others find stability so that they can have positive relationships, a rewarding work experience and happiness in life instead of constant mood swings. It’s still my goal and always will be- I jsut wish I had 100 fingers so that I could answer each one of you personally!

Defintely keep writing!

Try a world and local news media fast!

I love sports radio- as many of you know. I stopped listening to and reading all local and world news about six months ago and moved into sports.

Sports radio is a lot of fun and man on man do those guys gossip! They gossip more than any tabloid magazine. I find it very funny and relaxing. Sports are big business and there are a lot of negative behaviors, lying, cheating, backstabbing, trash talking and throwing too many interceptions – especially if you are my favorite player- Jay Cutler!

And yet, it’s all done in a rather positive way with a lot of laughter and playfulness.  Even the recent story of Tiger Woods and his ‘transgretions’ was handled differently in the sports radio world than in the tabloids.  It’s refreshing.

What is my point in all of this?  When I watched the news, listened to NPR (National Public Radio) all day and read the Internet and even the newspaper headlines, I became upset. The stories rarely changed and there was so much murder, abuse and war that it simply overwhelmed me- especially when I was depressed.  About four months after my media fast, I missed listening to NPR so I turned it on. The stories were exactly the same as when I stopped listening. In fact, they were the same stories from last year and the year before.

So I 100% stopped.  Interestingly, there is little that goes on that I don’t hear about through a glace at the Yahoo home page or through my very politically savvy friends. If I want to know, I can ask.

This has changed my life.  I now have a truly enjoyable entertainment outlet in sports radio- I can even listen to it before I go to bed.

If you have a lot of depression, anxiety, money worries or just plain old stress, consider a media fast of at least a month. You may find it will turn into a lot more!

And if you’re a sports lover and want to have a  few hours with a lot of  well known guests and a lot of great laughs, visit www.danpatrick.com

I do have to say sports is not all fun and games- especially when your favorite player leads the league in interceptions!
