{"id":215,"date":"2013-04-14T00:38:15","date_gmt":"2013-04-14T07:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bipolarhappens.com\/bhblog\/2008\/06\/09\/my-brother-talks-about-my-bipolar-mania\/"},"modified":"2018-05-15T09:58:16","modified_gmt":"2018-05-15T16:58:16","slug":"my-brother-talks-about-my-bipolar-mania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bipolarhappens.com\/bhblog\/my-brother-talks-about-my-bipolar-mania\/","title":{"rendered":"My Brother  Ed Talks About My Bipolar Mania (and it&#8217;s not fun to hear what he has to say!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bipolarhappens.com\/bhblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/awesome-cook.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7404\" style=\"margin: 25px;\" alt=\"awesome cook\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bipolarhappens.com\/bhblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/awesome-cook-300x224.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I had a live mental health radio show in 2007.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Andy Behrman, the author of Electroboy was one of my favorite guests. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was<\/span> a fantastic interview as it\u2019s always great to two people with bipolar disorder to discuss the illness!<\/p>\n<p>In order to prepare for the show, I asked my brother to tell me what it\u2019s like to have a sister with bipolar disorder.\u00a0 I did the same with my friends- if you listen to the show, you can hear the letter my friend Karen wrote explaining how she helps me stay stable when I get manic.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what my brother wrote when I asked him about my mania:\u00a0 That&#8217;s him grilling his freshly caught salmon!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Hmm&#8230;How to Deal with Julie\u2019s Mania<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Simple, blunt and to the point\u2026<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>It\u2019s hard to look for the signs that Julie has taught us with the Health Cards. Even after all of these years, a conversation with my mom about something Julie did will have me saying, \u201cOf course! How could I not have noticed the tell tale behavior of the week!\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>If I were a casual friend, then I would probably never bother with it and would write off our friendship as too much work. It takes a special (unique!) person to care, learn and follow through on what Julie needs from a good friend. Actually, as an older, middle age adult, I care more about relationships and other people\u2019s feelings.\u00a0 I think I would be willing to put up with what Julie needs from a friend. As a young man. No way!<\/em><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em> Julie\u2019s qualities are worth it though! If it weren\u2019t for those, I could see where some people with mental health issues would be out of luck!<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Ed<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>Hmm.\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting (and sometimes painful!) to read an honest assessment of your own behaviors.\u00a0 Ed and I have worked on our relationship for a long time. It took him a few years to even understand how the Health Cards work and why they are so essential to my health! He is a good brother.<\/p>\n<p>This was written five years ago-\u00a0 it&#8217;s different now. I don&#8217;t have much mania any more. I&#8217;ve learned to manage it a lot better- especially with my new meds.\u00a0 I believe that his honesty is good for all of us who have mania.\u00a0 It we don&#8217;t manage it ourself- we wear people out!\u00a0 I don&#8217;t want to show his words to people- I feel like they make me look out of control!
